Secrets To Dog Training – How To Guarantee That Your Dog Learns The Most Common Obedience Commands
Article by Valerie Mills
Would you like to guarantee that your dog learns the most common obedience commands? This is much easier than you might believe!Think carefully about the times you interact with your dog(s) during the day and see which of the common obedience commands you can incorporate into these interactions. Here’s a few examples:Examples
1. You’re bringing your dog in from outdoors. Ask him to Sit and Stay, and once you’ve walked through the door into your home, ask him to Come. Same activity going out the door, unless the dog really has to go! 2. Before you put his full food disk on the floor, ask for a Sit or a Down.3. Your new puppy is shadowing you all over the house. As he’s following you, stop, say Come, and lavish a lot of praise when the dog comes to you (and he will).4. My pup Alvin gets an occasional ice cube to supplement his drinking water. I get him to lie down, put the ice cube a foot in front of him, and say Leave It. Once he looks at me, I say Okay and he gets the ice cube.5. My other pup Simon is leased in the house sometimes because he’s not fully housetrained. So we practice the Come command a lot. What Happens When You Follow ThroughI’m sure you can think of other situations where you can use these common obedience commands. Once you’ve done these reinforcing activities for a few weeks, they become part of the routine. Your dog will do them automatically. You will find that it’ll make life easier for you and you will have a well-trained dog in no time. As a new puppy owner myself, anything that makes life easier is a gift!Learn More About Common Obedience CommandsWant to learn more about common obedience commands?Check out this effective Dog Training DVD.When you’re faced with puppy training problems and need solutions FAST, you’ll get answers from professional dog trainers in the Dog Training BIBLE – Secrets to Dog Training..This article originally published on ezinearticles.com by Valerie Mills.

What are dog obedience classes like?
I’m starting an obedience class with my dog for the first time, and I was just wondering what you really do in it; what’s it like? I know what you’re taught and everything, but I just wanted to know how they teach it to you, etc. Everytime I try to find out on google they only give me ‘does your dog need training? Come here and sign up!’
How to start off training my dog?
I have a 6 month old lab/shepherd mix. She is full of energy. How should I start off training her? With a walk first, so she’s a bit calm for the obedience training?
New dog training approach?
I got this new book as a freebie when my Koehler book came. And it is very interesting. It’s called “Taste of His Own Medicine” By Alexis Walker. . . an apparently new dog training star. In it she explains the new trend in obedience training dogs. So if your dog rushes you at the door, jumping up and trying to nip you in the face, you have to beat him to it. So walk in the door get in his face and start nipping at his mouth. For leash training, if your dog pulls, you’re supposed to continuously try to outrun him. If he urinates on your carpet. . . well, you get the idea. Has anyone heard of this new trainer or her methods? Has anyone tried them?I don’t know if it’s for me but I’m open to anything new. It has some high praise testimonials from dog owners and an endorsement from something called the PDTC. Anyone ever heard of that? And it has the most adorable Yorkie/Staff mix on the cover. So I might just have to give it a try. Does this sound like something you would be willing to try on your dog? What do you think? No jab at Koehler. Not his fault the new book was shipped in the same box. lol
Has anyone tried clicker training with their dog?
My 6 month old Sheltie just finished basic obedience which she excelled in. The instructor (who has been teaching for 20 or so years) said she’s the most natural she’s ever seen! I had to brag! We are starting agility this week and they use a clicker. I’m afraid the clicker will set her back. I’m planning on doing competitive dog obedience (novice) in December with her. She also has a 12 week old Sheltie brother who is more of an average learner. Should I think about clicker training with him?
