A client recently found me as a trainer by stopping people on the street with well behaved dogs and asked them if they had used a trainer and what they thought. I thought that was a very interesting approach.

well where do you live? There are lots of trainers out there but not all should be trusted. I am just about done with schooling for animal behavior and training and I can say don’t choose just any trainer there are a lot of people claiming they know it all don’t be fooled.
Ask questions what are there specialties, how long have they been training, are they certified? A good trainer will be certified this means that they keep up to date on new training techniques and new ideas on how to deal with different situations. I know of a few different web sites you can go to and they have a list. here are two good ones. good luck

That depends on what you consider the "best". Knowing what works with your dog would be the way to go. If you want "Most Proven", DJL has given you a link to Koehler training….Bill Koehler is arguably the most proven method…..but considered barbaric by most newbies.

Do *not* rely on koehler dog training! This is outdated, jerk and pop, negative based training that reeks of the Spanish Inquistion.
There are a lot of idiots out there. There are two organizations that sanction dog trainers NADOI (National Association of Dog Obedience Instructors) and APDT (Association of Pet Dog Trainers). A trainer who is a member of either of these organization at least has some education and knowledge.

Basic commands not only teach helpful skills, they reinforce your role as your dog’s leader. Using treats to lure your dog into the correct position or place, and then to reward her for obeying, is one of the easiest and most dog-friendly methods.
