It is a low probability event that one individual specific “hunting species” dog will turn out to be a good retriever or pointer. So it’s an even lower probability that a fighting dog species will show retriever skills, but there’s only one way to find out. Take it hunting, and encourage all positive traits, while gently discouraging all negative traits. The least that will happen is fun outings.

Beagles are Born and Bred to Hunt Rabbits instinctively. * Get yourself a Beagle. * Your Dog will never Hunt Rabbits. * After you get a Beagle just take him, or her out where there are Rabbits, and he, or she will Hunt them naturally. *

Pretty much any dog can be trained to hunt just like other jobs but a lot depends on the instinct of the dog. I?ve seen retriever competitions with terriers and boxers trained to point. If you?re shooting the most important thing would be to acclimate the dog to the sound of the firearm. Don?t do this by blasting a 12 gauge next to him/her the first time but start with other loud sounds and it usually works well if you have the dog doing something they enjoy so they learn to associate the sound with fun and not become afraid of it. As for rabbits I say go for it, if the dog has fun and doesn?t destroy the game (it shouldn?t if you work with it) it could be a good time. It?s unlikely a Rottweiler will catch many rabbits but I bet they?d have fun chasing them. Here’s an interesting page http://www. beaglesunlimited. com/beagletraining_startingpupsonrabbits. htmIt’s focused on beagle’s but the same should apply to most dogs if they have any natural instinct.

rottweilers aren’t good hunting dogs unless hunting hogs, their bite is too strong and they can destroy something small by accident, like the rabbit you planning on eating yourself. beagles and labs work better as retrievers, but beagles were bred for this, they’re small enough to retrieve a rabbit nearly anywheres it is and goes, like down their holes. I don’t advise this unless you can train your dog to have a gentle mouth, then it might, just might work, but not easy when hunting in brush, where the dog can’t follow the rabbit every wheres it goes.

rottweilers are not made for hunting rabbits. i don’t believe you would have good results trying to train a rottweiler for rabbits.
