Dog Lovers Anonymous: Helpful Tips for Wait

Shelby Linstrom
I touched briefly on the wait command in the “Stay” training video. Wait is used for short periods of time and it is a 2 finger signal instead of full hand. The best place to practice wait with your dog is at the door. Teach your dog to wait until you invite them through the door. Instead of being pushed over and rushed, you can have your dog wait nicely for you. While training, if you dog approaches the door, body block him back, tell him to sit and wait again. When you notice that your dog has lost interest and/or does not make a move for the door, say “okay” and give lots of praise and love.
Practice this anytime you walk through a door. You will have your dog waiting in no time. These tips are recommended for all breeds, including: Affenpinscher, Afghan Hound, Airedale Terrier, Akita, Alaskan Malamute, American Eskimo Dog, American Foxhound, American Staffordshire Terrier, American Water Spaniel, Anatolian Shepherd Dog, Australian Cattle Dog, Australian Shepherd, Australian Terrier, Basenji, Basset Hound, Beagle, Bearded Collie, Beauceron, Bedlington Terrer, Belgian Malinois, Belgian Sheepdog, Belgian Tervuren, Bernese Mountain Dog, Bichon Frise, Black and Tan Coonhound, Black Russian Terrier, Bloodhound, Border Collie, Border Terrier, Borzoi, Boston Terrier, Bouvier des Flandres, Boxer, Briard, Brittany, Brussels Griffon, Bull Terrier, Bulldog, Bullmastiff, Cairn Terrier, Canaan Dog, Cardigan Welsh Corgi, Cavvalier King Charles Spaniel, Chesapeake Bay Retriever, Chihuahua, Chinese Crested, Chinese Shar-Pei, Chow Chow, Clumber Spaniel, Cocker Spaniel, Collie, Curly-Coated Retriever, Dachshund, Dalmation, Dandie Dinmont Terrier, Doberman Pinscher, Dogue de Bordeaux, English Cocker Spaniel, English Foxhound, English Setter,
